Temple Newsam Golf Club

In the early days there was only one course, which was held in such high esteem that Temple Newsam was short listed to be the venue for the first ever Ryder Cup match to be held on British soil, in 1929. Sadly for Temple Newsam, that honour went to Moortown.
Short listed again in 1933, Temple Newsam again lost out, this time to the long established Southport and Ainsdale Golf Cub. Among the GB & I team was one Percy Alliss, the then professional at Temple Newsam.
The Yorkshire Evening News professional tournament was played at Temple Newsam in 1933. The final, contested between two Ryder Cup players, saw Arthur Lacey beat Alf Padgham by 2 up with 1 to play.
The Y.E.N. Professional tournament was again held at Temple Newsam in 1936 and 1939. Both events saw Ryder Cup players emerging victorious, Dick Burton in 1936 and Dai Rees in 1939.
Also in 1939, a team of six British PGA golfers, captained by Arthur Lacey, were defeated by an Argentinean team that included Jose Jurado and Martin Pose.
